What is this box?

What is this box? In the 1990s, mission strategist Luis Bush coined this rectangular area: "the 10/40 window.” It is an imaginary box 10 and 40 degrees latitude north of the equator stretching from North/West Africa to East Asia. The spiritual strongholds of Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism dominate the peoples in these lands. It has also been called “the Resistant Belt” because serving in these countries is hard. Yet, this is the last frontier in missions.

 Just look at the statistics:

  • 2/3 of the world’s population live in the 10/40 window

  • 95% of the world’s unreached peoples live in the 10/40 window

  • 45/50 of the worst persecuted people are in the 10/40 window

Now look at the great omission in the great commission:

  • Only .001% of mission giving is for work in the 10/40 window - that’s less than what people have spent on Halloween costumes for their pets!

  • Only 3% of the missionary force is serving in the 10/40 window - that is demonstrating a massive imbalance in prioritizing mission efforts.

Should everyone then go to these lands in obedience to the command to “disciple the nations”? That certainly would adjust the statistics, but we need to follow the strategic plan of our Commander in Chief. What we find in his Word is that the Holy Spirit calls workers to go, they are sent and supported by the church (Acts 13:2-3) to preach the gospel of the kingdom in ever-widening circles (Acts 1:8) to all peoples until “… those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.” (Romans 15:21)

The 10/40 window is the final frontier in missions. Praise God, in his providence, the fields where we are serving are in this window. We have importunity to continue supporting this area of the world in prayer and financial giving.
